Inspired by Music
Mrs. Bezubiak's Class

Music is a big part of my program.  I use music for transitions, learning concepts, creative movement and for enjoyment.

Transition songs are very important to the overall environment of the class.  We are constantly moving from one activity to the other.  To make the transitions smooth I start to sing short rhyming songs to gather the children.

Favorite Colors song from
Phonemic Awareness for Fall

So many crayons in the box for you,
Red ones, yellow ones, blue ones too!
But the one little crayon that rhymes with bean
Its my favorite color.
Its the color green.

The Corner Grocery Store
sung to the tune of
"The Quarter Master store"

There were cats, cats, cats
wearing their hats, hats, hats.
At the store, at the store.
There were cats, cats, cats
wearing their hats, hats, hats.
At the corner grocery store.

There were fish, fish, fish
sitting in a dish, dish, dish.
At the store, at the store.
There were fish, fish, fish
sitting in a dish, dish, dish.
At the corner grocery store.

Hand Rhyme

Open them, Shut them
Open them, Shut them
Open them, Shut them
Give them a clap
Open them, Shut them
Open them, Shut them
Open them, Shut them
Put them in your lap.

I have a very talented assistant working in my class this year.  She plays the guitar and has a beautiful voice.  One song that she has been teaching the children this year is "Love Can Build a Bridge" performed by the Judds and illustrated by Suzanne Duranceau.  The students love this song and love to connect the song to their everyday lives.

I have a student this year who is fluent in sign language and she has taught the other children how to sign the chorus.

LOVE

The hands hug something over the heart to indicate the concept of love.

CAN

The fists move as if pushing something down to show that a person can do it.

BUILD

The hands show things being piled up one on top of the other to represent the concept of something being built.

A

Hand position shown for finger spelling of letter A.

BRIDGE

The tips of the V hand shape touches the underside of the wrist and elbow. This represents the support that holds a bridge up.

BETWEEN

The position of one hand shows the concept of being between two things. In this sign, the hand is between the thumb and index finger.

YOUR

The sign YOU is made with an open hand with the fingers together. This hand shape is associated with the concept of possession.

HEART

The middle finger taps the chest over the area of the heart.

AND

The fingers come together.

MINE

The forefinger digs into the palm of the other hand.

We have been singing this song all year and the children love to SIGN the chorus and to look through the pictures in the book when it is being sung.  This song continues to bring our classroom community together and has a wonderful message.
