Phoneme Songs
with Mrs. Vaage's Grade 1A Class

Over the years, I have come to realize that when children learn a song, the text and concepts contained in that song go directly into long-term memory. Students learning Dinosaur songs could recite facts to their parents at their Celebrations of Learning using the words from the song. This year, we tried to create our own songs to help us remember the differences between those tricky letters:

b d p q

p

The first one we learned was "p" - we practiced a song for this letter right after Remembrance Day, when we all had poppies. The song goes to the tune of B-I-N-G-O.

I had a poppy in my pencil
Put it in my pocket.
Pain! Pain! It poked me now!
Pain! Pain! It poked me now!
Pain! Pain! It poked me now!
My pencil in my pocket.

We had direct experience of poppies poking us, and we used a visual and drawing of a poppy in our pencil, which remains up at the front of our class to help us remember. P's are very rarely reversed any more.

b

The second one was "b" - and to think of something within the child's world, with a visual that would help associate the direction of the b, we chose a backpack. The song we created goes to the tune of Bring Back My Bonnie to Me.

My backpack is full of bananas.
My backpack is full of big books.
My backpack was left on the school bush.
Oh, bring back my backpack to me.
Bring back, bring back,
Oh, bring back my backpack to me, to me.
Bring back, bring back,
Oh, bring back my backpack to me.

The visual for this is a child facing left carrying his/her backpack.

q

The next one we chose was "q" - and this one needed to have the royalty connection to link with our queen word association for q. The melody is The Grand Old Duke of York.

The quiet queen is here,
The quiet queen is here,
Quick, pick up her gown before it touches the ground,
The quiet queen is here.

The visual is the queen facing left with her long train dragging down to the right.

d

We still need to create a song for this letter...

Michael Mitchell

One of our most favorite musicians is Michael Mitchell. He came to our school in November, and we practised singing his songs
